Springtime Hazards

Now that spring is here and Easter is almost upon us, please remember there are a lot of hazards to your pet that come around this time of year.  Always be aware of what is in and around your house that may be harmful to your pet if ingested. Here is a list of some hazards this time of the year:

  • Plastic Easter eggs – can break and sharp pieces can cause mouth or intestinal cuts as well as obstructions that need surgical removal.

  • Easter grass – tends to be plastic pieces that can cause intestines to loop together and cause major problems for your pet. Surgery is almost always needed.

  • Chocolate – Large amounts of chocolate ingested by your pet can be harmful as well as cause permanent organ damage.

  • Candy – Certain candy or chewing gum may contain xylitol which is toxic to pets.

  • Ant traps/baits – These can be fateful to your pet if ingested and they are not taken to a veterinarian immediately.

  • Macadamia Nuts – Can cause lots of neurologic symptoms in pets that may require hospitalization to treat.

  • Expanding Wood Glues – These glues will expand in the stomach and intestinal tract causing an obstruction that surgery is required to repair.

  • Alkaline Products –  pool chemicals, dishwasher detergent, batteries, drain openers, toilet bowl cleaners and radiator cleaning agents just to name a few.  Can cause burns in the mouth and necrosis of tissue.

  • Fertilizers – Some fertilizers may have harmful chemicals in the for your pet. .
